Exploring Chinese Herbal Medicine as a Treatment for Cerebral Palsy
6/1/2025
Reviewed by: Cerebral Palsy Center Editorial Team
According to a recent study, Chinese Herbal Medicine (CHM) may offer an added holistic approach to managing cerebral palsy in children, with the potential to enhance functional abilities and independence.
The study focused on effects of combining a regimen of herbal medicine with traditional therapeutic treatments. Results were published in the February 2025 edition of Frontiers in Pharmacology.
Using meta-analysis, researchers from Taiwan examined 17 prior randomized controlled trials to evaluate the effectiveness of oral CHM in treating pediatric cerebral palsy.
The study found that Chinese Herbal Medicine, when combined with standard treatments, significantly improved motor function and daily living activities compared to standard treatments alone.

Enhancing Motor Function and Daily Living
The meta-analysis revealed that children receiving CHM alongside conventional therapy showed notable improvements in gross motor function and activities of daily living.
These enhancements suggest that CHM can be a valuable adjunct in comprehensive CP management plans, potentially leading to better mobility and self-care capabilities.
Core Herbs and Their Therapeutic Roles
The study identified several core herbs frequently used in effective CHM formulations that may benefit children with cerebral palsy:
- Poria cocos wolf: Known for its calming effects and support of digestive health.
- Paeonia lactiflora Pall.: Traditionally used to alleviate muscle spasms and pain.
- Processed Rehmannia glutinosa: Believed to nourish the kidneys and support neurological function.
- Astragalus mongholicus Bunge: Often utilized to boost the immune system and energy levels.
- Angelica sinensis Diels: Commonly used to improve blood circulation and reduce inflammation.
These herbs are thought to work synergistically to address various aspects of cerebral palsy, such as muscle tone regulation, immune support, and neurological function.
Safety and Considerations
Importantly, the meta-analysis reported no severe adverse events associated with CHM use in the included studies, suggesting a favorable safety profile when administered appropriately.
However, it's crucial for parents to consult with qualified healthcare professionals experienced in both conventional and traditional Chinese medicine to ensure safe and effective integration into their child's treatment plan.
Integrating CHM into Comprehensive Care
While CHM shows promise, it should only be considered to complement, not replace, established therapies such as physical therapy, occupational therapy, and other medical interventions.
A multidisciplinary approach ensures that all aspects of a child's well-being are addressed, maximizing the potential for improved outcomes.
Encouraging Results
The integration of Chinese Herbal Medicine into the treatment regimen for children with cerebral palsy offers a promising option to enhance motor function and daily living activities.
These findings provide encouraging evidence supporting the use of CHM as a complementary therapy. As with any treatment, it's essential to approach herbal medicine thoughtfully, under the guidance of qualified professionals, to ensure the safest outcomes.
